Welcome to Cindy and David's 2014 Adventures
Los Angeles to Monterey
We were collected from our hotel in LA by friends Jeff and Lori Brooks and taken on yet another amazing freeway northwards, stopping off at San Luis Obisbo to visit Kaylie at her college campus, California Polytechnic University. We met her at her apartment on campus (Kaylie is pictured above with room mates Kelsey and Megan) and then we drove down to the town for dinner at the Creeky Tiki bar and grill (how's that for a name?) The above Mission, which we overlooked across the creek from our table, was established in 1772.
Highway 1 north from LA took us through Santa Barbara and that first night after dinner with Kaylie, we stayed at Morro Bay. A beautiful town.
The rock shown in the background is known as Morro Rock.
This is where we had our first sighting of otters just floating in the bay on their backs.
We drove on the next day past Hearst Castle (on the hill - above right).
We tried to get on a tour of the Hearst Castle but would have had to wait rather longer than our timing allowed. I bought a small book illustrating the amazing rooms. Reminds me of the opulance of The Hermitage in St Petersburg.
The following day we visited San Simeon, which is home to a large colony of Elephant Seals, then on past Big Sur and stayed in Monterey for the second night.
We saw several whales on our journey but all far out to sea.
The island below just caught my attention as the house on the hill looked just so lonely.
In Monterey we took a walk down to the ocean through the golf course directly at the back of our hotel rooms, carefully avoiding annoying the male deer who kept a keen eye on us. At the beach we watched otters floating on their backs whilst eating their catch (probably oysters). They seem to be in pairs and literally frolic in the surf. None were obliging enough to pose for photos!
