Welcome to Cindy and David's 2014 Adventures
San Diego (page 3)
Our next few days were spent also near San Diego but at Carlsbad a little further up the coast at cousin Phillip and Margie's apartment (left top floor). Above is Phil and David outside their daughter Heather's house which we visited on a tour of the area which included exploring the huge project going on in Carlsbad at present building a desalination plant. The drought situation in California generally is pretty bad at present.
During our tour Phil took us to inspect his RV (above) which had actually been featured in a tv program where the tv team "upgraded" the interior. A lot of the things done are very nice but in fact it was a case of more haste less speed in that the finished result is certainly not as Phil would have liked. He did in fact have to do quite a lot of renovating the renovations!
We spent a fair amount of time at the beach and one afternoon we did an amazing walk called Torrey Pines consisting of a walk from the top of the cliff down to the beach.
It was very hot and quite an arduous track and Margie kindly went back up from half way down to bring the car down to the beach as to walk back up again the whole way would have been rather more than any of us were capable of!!!
Torrey Pines
As you can see from the photos the general San Diego area is quite stunning. Mountains and sea and views forever.
The climate is stable and very warm and very dry esp this time of the year.
Left is the view from Margie and Phil's apartment and right at the end of this page are photos of the humming birds who frequented the feeder hanging from the balcony.
Below is Phil's business workshop. He has invented and manufactures a self-steering windvane for ocean going yachts.
We spent a memorable day driving out to the desert region down towards Mexico. The mountain area is beautiful and we drove past the first property where Phil & Margie and family first lived on their arrival in the USA where they had an ostrich ranch. We stopped for morning tea at Julian a gorgeous little village in the mountains. The area specialises in apple pies, exporting them around the USA but the we merely enjoyed a large helping each at the tea shop. The trouble with holidays is the amount of lovely food one eats ( all the time!)
I should have mentioned that whilst in Carlsbad we went to the local golf club where we were served an amazing lunch. You see, it's all about food.......
Below is a shot of the desert. We did not stop along the way as we had a time problem as it was quite a journey. If you look closely at the big tank at the picture next to it you will see we were actually about 200 ft below sea level!!!
This part of the desert looks like a boulder dump!
We didn't take a good shot of all the cousins at the farewell dinner before we left San Diego but there is at least the one of Ian (above!) However, on the left is a shot of the two couples who took such good care of us during our time with them. This was taken at the restaurant that night called the Claim Jumper (something to do with the mining history). (More good food!)
