Welcome to Cindy and David's 2013 Adventures
Note 39 - White Cliffs Orange Baturst and Home
The trusty Toyota coming down the "mountain" at speed ?"
Bathurst town is very attractive and was well presented from the Bathurst 500 car race which was run two weeks earlier.

The Blue Mountains near Lithgow; you can see the plumes of smoke from the fires, but that was as close as we got to fires
It was hot, 40 degrees C, then a storm blew in and dropped the temperature.
Our direct route home suffered a slight twist when we realised how close we were to White Cliffs, the famous opal mining town. So a side trip was called for. Not a very pretty place (understatement) but caravan park was ok and one of the current occupants told us that during one previous visit they had done some fossicking in the area and found an enormous opal worth $1000 which she had set and came back each year hoping for the same luck.
In the picture above is a mullock heap in the foreground around a mine in the vast plains of the desert.
Most homes are either completely underground or partially to escape the heat (and the flies I should think!)
Our route took us through the lovely town of Orange which gave us the opportunity to call on an old friend who moved away from Sydney some 18 months ago, Joan Roberts. Her two sisters joined us for tea and cake and a lovely time was had by all. Great fun.
Our final stop was in Bathurst, a town which we are very fond of. David spent time at the University there some years ago and of course the great mountain raceway is a great attraction as the roads are open for all to try out!

Watching the race on tv doesn't give you the idea of how high the mountain is but this is the view from the top (above)
It is good to be home!
