Welcome to Cindy and David's 2013 Adventures
Note 37 - Port Augusta, Adelaide
The call of home is getting stronger and so we set off very early with our destination being Broken Hill in NSW. On the way, we stopped at Burra,a very pretty town in the hills 100km north of Adelaide which used to be a very active mining town (see miners' cottages on right).
David found this pretty poppy in the side of the mine dump!
We did not make Broken Hill until the next day and did a hasty free camp in a place called Mannahill.
Sam, sorry, but it's the best photo we got of you
Geoff, Barry, Jill
On towards Adelaide brought us to the beautiful town of Clare where David spotted Jim Barry wines - his favourite. (The red writing looks very much like 'open DRILY' not Daily).

Spear Creek is a favourite tiny caravan park previously visited and worth a return. We took a while to find it, stuck below the Flinders Ranges quite a way on from Port Augusta. David was able to do another campfire (happy face!). The weather is back to normal if a bit chilly at night. Below you can see we weren't bothered by too many close neighbours!

A couple of days rest and relaxation in Streaky Bay was called for after the rather flat out drive across the desert. We arrived to perfect weather and the next day it was like another world. Howling winds so we made the best of it by driving around the area exploring the dramatic coast line and looking at rocks (right) again!
Adelaide has one of the best Big4 Caravan parks in the country (at least it does normally). It is huge with plenty of space for everyone with lots of ablution blocks UNTIL we arrived! We had one day right next to the Ladies and the next day they closed not one but two blocks for maintenance! So for the remainder of our stay we had a very long walk to Block 3. No points to Big4. Worse though was the fact that the park was left with no Disabled facilities which threw our immediate neighbours into a dilemma as they had a disabled daughter in a wheelchair. Management just shrugged! Outrageous.
Of course, our main reason for visiting Adelaide was to catch up with the Clarke family (whom we have known since our days in the Immigration Hostel in 1979). Jill and Geoff have two sons and a daughter, all now married and all with two boys! A fabulous get together!
