Welcome to Cindy and David's 2013 Adventures
Note 35 - Wave Rock and Denmark to Esperance
I think it is safe to say if that was a real wave I would be well and truly dumped!
We walked up the steps at the back of the "wave" to find a dam which is the water supply for the local town of Hyden. The views from the top of the rock were amazing and did not come out as well as they should have on camera.
On the right is just down the road from Wave Rock, called Hippos Yawn! H'm! Geologists would be greatly interested because it is a special kind of rock formation worn like this through the years. Have to say I would not have driven two extra days just for this...
If nothing else, the drive back downwards to Esperance was worth doing. The flowers and shrubs were prolific and we had to stop quite a few times just to admire them.
However, Esperance was not our destination that day, just a bit too far so we drove right down to the coast again to Hopetoun.
These daisies were just at the roadside when we stopped for tea. We think they are all one plant in various degrees of growth. What stunning colours.
We should have started a collection of photos of items placed outside farm gates! This is by far the best so far.
Hopetoun from the jetty. Hopetoun was developed as a port for the gold mines early in the 1900's There are new estates of houses mostly inhabited by workers in overalls, so certainly, the mining operations are on-going.
We stayed as a pleasant, peaceful park right on the beach just for the night and set off at last for Esperance.
This bottlebrush was among many just growing on the side of the road.
We stopped for tea on the side of the road where millions of butterflies were busy in the common white flowers.
Many meet a sticky end on the grills and wind-screens while crossing the roads !
Wish I could say that about all the flies.
Esperance from the Rotary Lookout overlooking the Bay and the town.
This was such a breathtaking view that I ended up taking a video in full circle just for our records.
On first arriving in Esperance we set the GPS to find a smaller caravan park for us away from the more popular seafront one but as we neared it we could tell it wasn't a good proposition. The mines are building again! Roads and railways on the top end of town have caused a huge upheaval and the poor old c/park had signs out saying they were still open but no, we thought not. So here we are in the seafront park in a beautiful position right on the front. Big site, right near the ablutions and all that and away from all the children in their tents etc at the back of the park! NOT that we have any objection to children per se but they are happier running around in the camping area with the parents not having to nag them to behave (in front of the oldies!) School holidays are nearly over in WA, they run later than NSW. Such is the spread of WA that we really haven't noticed too many children around - there is plenty of room for all!
So once set up, we went straight out on to the Ocean Drive which is so famous in this region. Miles of road along the coast with beach after beach (16 in all apparently), all beckoning to us to swim. Lovely waves, white sand, no rips and no people! What more could one ask? However, it is now raining..... Naturally.
So the forecast for tomorrow is superb and if that is so, guess what we will be doing!
