A major highlight of this trip was spent on a tour of the Adelaide River, once more down south on the way to Kakadu. Sybil had done this tour before and highly recommended it to us. Thank goodness she did, it was by far the best crocodile exploration trip we have ever done.
It is run by a lovely friendly and knowledgeable couple, Alex and Kelly and we were a group of around 11 taken many kilometres downriver to visit the MANY crocodiles who live in the area. We saw mainly the large males resting in the sun on the mud banks. There were a lot of them. David has done a separate page as there were so many. The one here on the far left appeared very sick and Kelly was concerned at the obvious weight loss on the back and tail part. In the end we all agreed it was actually dead! Just as we were leaving, it turned around and went under the water! Not dead. However, Kelly intended to report it (don't know exactly who to or what they would do!)
The other croc is obviously in the peak of health.
Morning tea was served on the boat during a quiet period and then a destination had been allocated on a nearby station where Alex cooked us a magnificent bbq with Kelly adding delicious salads.
We were joined by members of the local Wallaby population who enjoyed snacks of raw carrot.
Afternoon drinks took place at a very famous (infamous) pub way down river on Goat Island (Caseys Bar) owned by this gentleman known as Kai. He is the character who hit the news as he has a "pet" crocodile who he calls up to come into his garden next to the river. He is a real character and full of fun and welcomes all us tourists into his bar, also having 3 or 4 helicopters land during the day on "pub crawls" can you believe. 2 landed during our visit.
Well, he did call up the croc and here he is. I must admit Kai keeps all visitors well away and we only stay within boundaries. It wouldn't do his thriving business any good if one of us got eaten....
Kai just leaned over the balcony and yelled "Casey" at the top of his voice and there was this huge crash as the croc heaved himself on to the bank and just lay there. Amazing stuff!
This was the moment the croc arrived. We were mostly unbelievers until that moment!
This one on the right is another fine example of the crocs in the area. The prettier their markings the younger they are. (They also get old and grey!)
An amazing and unforgettable day helped also by the brilliant bird life.
