Welcome to Cindy and David's 2013 Adventures
Note 21 - Broome
Camels at sunset on Cable beach
Dinosaur footprints at Gantheaume point which can only be seen at extreme low tide.
Again, like the Full Moon rising over the mud flats at low tide, it really only happens about 5 or 6 times a year.
Highlights
Cable Beach,
Broome Town known for pearling,
Town Beach,
Broome Golf Course,
Stairway to the Moon,
Dinasaur footprints at Gautheaume point
What a lovely town Broome is. Or perhaps is it because we have had so many weeks of tiny or no towns that it seems like an oasis? Whichever, we enjoyed our stay even though we were back to red dirt everywhere. Cable Beach is just lovely and goes on forever and as you can see, the camels, the sunset and beautiful days were wonderful.
Directly above: we went to look at the historical outdoor cinema building in the main street and gasped at the old movie equipment on display. The cinema is still operating (presumably with somewhat more up to date projectors!)
Above left and left is a monument in the main street to the pearling industry which we thought rather different than the usual rocks with plaques which are many in this part of the world.
Above left: Staircase to the Moon.
We were thrilled to discover that we had hit on just the right time to see the famous event which happens about three days a month at full moon providing the tide is very low). Crowds turn up at Town Beach (the other side of the peninsular) and anticipation runs high as it is very dark (we have all rushed over from Cable Beach having watched the sunset!) and then dead on time the sky becomes red and this huge moon makes its appearance and as it slowly rises so the light spreads over the beach and the mud flats produce the staircase. Very beautiful experience.
Broome Town Beach
Wreck of the Catalina which was a casualty of the Japanese bombing in WW2
We went to the Bird Observatory - not many birds
Broome has a beautiful Golf course
View from the Golf course club house veranda
Gantheaume point is a very picturesque point where the red cliffs meet the ocean
Below is 'Anastasias pool' which was built by the light-house keeper many years ago so his arthritic wife could bathe and get some relief from her aches and pains
