Welcome to Cindy and David's 2013 Adventures
Note18 - Purnululu, Fitzroy Crossing
In order to avoid the next "rip off" we plotted and schemed and found a terrific free camp right nearby the entrance to the Bungle Bungles (Purnululu) from which we also watched another lovely sunset. However, our fears were unfounded as the entrance fee to this National Park was $5 for the day!
David has been waiting to show me the B/Bungles since his trip up here with Nev and Jeff way back when, and he couldn't wait for my reaction when we drove into the Piccaninny area with its magnificent vista of the "beehives".
Firstly, however, we walked the Echidna gorge just to get the walking skills up and running..... David has included a shot below of the stony track as an example of how unpleasant gorge walking is!

Have no idea what to label this. Lumps of stone I guess. ( It just fascinated David) ..
Editor note...
Really ! Do I have to explain... These are rocks..conglomerate rocks. The entire mountain is made if this material. Photos of cliff faces are too far away to see this wonderful texture.
The start of the gorge walk
I have to say I was duly impressed. A huge vista of these beehive shapes in all sorts of lovely colours and groups. For once I did not moan about the walking, the heat etc. It was breathtaking in all its splendour.

I am beginning to feel a bit sorry for our sturdy Toyota. It has now done over 280,000 kms and we take it over the most appalling surfaces! The 53 kms from the main road into the Bungles was extremely harrowing. David assures me the track has been very much improved since his last visit. H'm!
After two days in the free camp we drove some 300kms on to Fitzroy Crossing where there is a very beautiful caravan park (see right). Lots of grassed sites, lots of space, brilliant ablutions, a pub and a restaurant. Mind you there is absolutely nothing else in "town" apart from an IGA store which is brand new, mainly because apparently it had been recently burnt to the ground. We'll have a couple of nights here as we are booked into Broome next Wednesday and so are in no hurry for a while.
