Welcome to Cindy and David's 2013 Adventures
Note 17 - Kununurra, Wyndham, ElQuestro
For those who have been there...some pics of Kununurra
Tequila supplier to thirsty travellers
Sunset from the Wyndham lookout. Wyndham is more than 50km from the ocean. The King, the Durack, the Pentecost the Ord and the Forrest rivers are the five rivers that run into this estuary called Cambridge Gulf.
The 4x4 track water-crossing to Moonlight Gorge.
An added comment is that the above looks exactly like the entrance to El Questro! That river is right outside the gates and is an impressive river crossing before entering the grounds of the camp.
Moonshine gorge was wonderful swimming, very clear and cool. Continual temperatures in the 30's means you are always looking for somewhere to cool off.
Zebedee Hot springs
"Owl" - El Questro private camp-site No 24, $25 per person per day, no power, no water, no toilet, no pool, no phone, no shade... plus $40 per vehicle for a Park fee (not even a National Park). What a RIP-OFF
My advice... Free-camp at the start of the Gibb River road and drive into El Questro, don't pay the $40, visit Zebedee springs in the morning, visit Moonlight gorge in the afternoon and drive out late afternoon.. All for nothing but the fuel.
The first thing one does on arrival at any town up here is SHOP, and I don't mean ladies' shopping, I mean filling the cupboards with food as there are hundreds of kilometres between any kind of shop, except for the odd (expensive) fuel stop. The further away from the Big Smoke we get, the higher the prices become.
However, I (Cindy) had a reasonably priced hair trim at Kunnunurra by a
young English girl. I asked her how she liked living up here and of course she said she loved it. I jokingly said the weather was a bit better than UK's to which she took exception. I subsided duly rebuked as she was the one with the scissors!
The lake is very pretty with two c/parks
either side. It is chokablock full of
fresh water crocodiles!
Kunnunurra had its show coming up as mentioned and so we drove up to Wyndham which has a lovely lookout duly attended by all members of the local c/park to watch the sunset (a regular occupation in these parts).
On the left is a regular visitor who seems to eat whatever greenery they do succeed in growing! He has been there at both our visits but is looking a little decrepit now. Above is said to be the "largest Boab tree is captivity!" which is a proud boast of the c/park. On the right is the view from the lookout down to the port where a ship is being loaded. Just to the right of the photo is a pen full of cows waiting to be loaded on another ship which hadn't arrived when we did and still hadn't when we left after three nights. We left the van in Wyndham and went into the Kimberleys to stay at El Questro.
