Welcome to Cindy and David's 2013 Adventures
Note 13 - Katherine
Katherine town standing at Woolies looking down the main street Left and Right
Don't know who is on the horse ? Think it is a general celebration of the past drovers in the area.
The main street heading North, note the caravans in the rest area
Looking down the river... Note the large tree trunk left by a flood, now look at the top of the tree for higher debris and try to imagine how high the flood must flow.
We took the dawn cruise (that's why we had to hurry and nearly trod on the snake!) We were also served a cooked breakfast on board which is always a delight.
Left is our van and above the park from our site and right is a PYTHON we nearly walked on when hurrying down to Katherine Gorge early one morning to catch our boat cruise. He was totally unconcerned by us (thank goodness) and carried on his slow way to the river where no doubt he planned to catch himself a bat from the huge colony nesting there.
I took a shot behind us at the rest of the people from the boat making their way from the first gorge over to the second.
We have not been very fond of Katherine on previous trips mainly because it is a major centre for all caravans converging whichever way they intend to go on and consequently it is very busy. The attached photos belie this theory - must have been early morning. However, this time we checked into a Big4 park which was enormous and beautifully run. Huge parklands heavily watered (bore-hole) and lots of shade for our vans. The ablutions were a sight to behold. (Remember we had just lumbered through a very basic part of Australia)! So everyone you met was on a high!!!! Relief at civilisation probably.
Our trip this time has covered a huge amount of gorges quite by chance but Katherine gorge (consisting of 13 gorges linked) is by far the most impressive and the most beautiful. We did two gorges.
We took some shots of the Katherine River near our park which is called "low Level". Lovely clear river - however, no swimming unless one has a death wish (crocs!)
The Big4 Caravan park (and the most photographed Toyota in the world (our world, that is)
We're told most of the gorge is 67 metres deep !
Photo taken from the low-level bridge looking south
Neighbours, Kerry and Lindsay, from "The Shire" . We stayed on at the park because it was beautiful but also because we met the Reeds (above), and had a thoroughly good time with them. Hope to keep in touch.
