Welcome to Cindy and David's 2016 Adventures
15 Childers, Concert, Bert Hinkler museum
Spent a day just up the road at Childers. One of our favourite towns with incredibly friendly people. Above left is the lovely old building that houses the RSL. The chap talking to David had thought he had designs on going inside! David explained he wasn't going in, it was just a photo......Meantime that odd photo on the right is just the crenellations of the buildings along the street next door to the Backpackers building.
The nightly visit from a couple of thousand lorikeets. Deafening!
Some shots taken on one of our bike rides (above and below left). One has to commend the Hervey Bay ground maintenance teams. The gardens and parks are a joy
The final bow taken by the Chamber Philharmonia Cologne (see below)
Our turn to visit Helen and Graeme, first to their caravan in Bargara and then on to Bundaberg for lunch and then a visit to the Hinkler Hall of Aviation. Fascinating museum beautifully presented and we were all totally engrossed reading and watching the amazing life story of Bert Hinkler and his flying exploits. What a terrific story! On the right is his house which he built during his time in England and which has now been relocated next to the museum and was brought over brick by brick.
Below is part of the wonderful sunset we saw on our way home that day.
We saw a poster advertising a musical event to be held locally in Hervey Bay and decided to take a look. Well, are we glad we did! This amazing group of musicians gave us the best afternoon of music one could wish for. Bach, Tchaikovsky,Handel, Vivaldi and Borne. They are based in Cologne at the University of Music but travel constantly visiting all over the world. Such talent!
The old Grand Hotel in Childers was converted into a backpackers hostel for housing fruit and vegetable workers. It was capable of accommodating up to 90 backpackers. In 2000 Robert Long deliberately set a fire downstairs after a grievance with the manager. You may remember that 15 young people were unable to escape as the windows were barred and the main staircase was on fire. The building was re-built and now houses the Information centre, a Glass exhibition and a memorial to the 15 victims.
