Welcome to Cindy and David's 2013 Adventures
Note 11 - Lawn Hill
After over 90 kms of dirt road we arrived at Adels Grove just outside the Lawn Hill National Park. What an oasis in the absolute middle of nowhere at all!
We picked a spot away from everyone and there we resided in this beautiful forest. David could have his campfire every night and he cooked some splendid food on it too! (The fish that he caught in the Norman River at Normanton)
In front of the office at Adels Grove they have built tent city by the river which are permanent so visitors without vans and camper trailers have somewhere to stay. Right is the river bed which is only wet in The Big Wet and now you can see the mess left behind by such an event. The water actually washes the roots clear away.
It is 10 kms to Lawn Hill and each day we sectioned out the walks. Firstly we did the lower gorge which was very pretty but was the lead up to the real thing
The rock formation on the lower Gorge walk
Left is the most perfect setting you can imagine with a lovely atmosphere of peace and beauty.
The lookout from the top of "The Stack"
So I took a photo of the sign
David produces a fire chimney!
This dingo posed for us! He also ran along behind us.... (Was it because he could smell the biltong David was making which he hung from the cargo barrier behind the back seats?
The next day brought us to walk the main gorge tracks. Stunning!
Spinifex grass
Indarra Lookout where the Indarra falls separate the Upper Gorge from the lower Gorge
Indarra Falls
The place where people drag their canoes around the falls to get to the upper gorge
We hired a canoe just to get the full effect of the gorge. Above shows where those with extra enthusiasm can put out their canoe and carry it on to the next gorge. We did NOT do this!
Altogether an idyllic few days which happened to encompass our birthdays and anniversary! We had a lovely dinner on the Sunday night at the outdoor restaurant at Adels Grove (lamb shanks!) and were suitably surprised when the staff brought out a small cake and sparkler and marched through the restaurant to wish us all the best. How embarrassing. Cindy's fault. She was friends with one of the blokes there and generally chatted with him each day and she must have mentioned our celebration. Anyway, very nice of them.
At the restaurant apart from a few guests were the entire staff of Adels Grove (lots) and all the crew from the local Lawn Hill station. What an evening!
