As a whale watch was not really a proposition at this time (too early in the season) we booked a 4 WD bus tour of Fraser Island.
This was a full and absorbing day as the coach driver was full of interesting facts and figures plus a lot of fun.
The children absolutely loved sitting in the back seat of the bus being thrown around as of course the roads are sand as is absolutely everything on Fraser and there are huge holes etc everywhere.
Along 75 mile beach is the wreck of the cruise ship Moheno which was of particular interest to all of us as the driver regaled us with the complete history of a very hard working ship and what a dreadful event the ship wreck was.
The Kingfisher resort hosted us for a very nice hot lunch with a very disappointing second course of tinned fruit!!! I suppose everything has to be brought over on the ferry so fresh fruit would be scarce. Not much grows in sand!
Couldn't resist introducing Maggie without her face. Not good is it? Above is our bus on 75 mile beach - story below.
On one of the stops we counted 40 4WD cars parked next to a freshwater stream full of partying people with their picnic and their music! Our driver informed us that they actually come in their hundreds on some days. We reserved judgement of whether this is a good thing or not for such an environment
We walked along a board walk and then back along the stream of clear water fit for drinking apparently. Fraser Island has enormous supplies of fresh water and the streams and lakes are magnificently clean.
It is mostly covered in forest and it is difficult to believe such magnificence grows purely in sand.
In the middle of our tour we were invited to take a quick flight over the island and to have a quick look around for whales. We declined but watched the various take offs and landings with interest. Obviously a thriving business.
We reached the lakes at the end of the day when the heat had definitely left the sun. However, the children were totally happy little chicks and had a great time. There were a great many overseas tourists with us and they didn't think it too cold!!
