Welcome to Cindy and David's 2013 Adventures
Note 07 - Innisfail
We stopped around lunch time at Cardwell. The Bruce highway is the only thing between the ocean and this poor town. In the distance is Hinchinbrook Island, but that did not save it from the category 5 cyclone in 2010. The beach was unceremoniously dumped on the town. the Highway was destroyed and most of the town got blown away. The surrounding forrest was stripped and smashed as the eye of the cyclone passed direcly over the town. We bought pies for lunch from the bakers shop that sells pies from the back of his trailer.
Found free camp just past Townsville at Saunders Beach. Beautiful beach and generally lovely spot
Etty Bay
The "stinger nets" around the swimming area at Etty bay
Spot the spotted Goanna
Our caravan site complete with washing line at Flying Fish Point
There were dozens of butterflies on this bottle-brush tree in the caravan park. I finally got a photo of the blue Ulysses one but, could not get one of the "Birdwing" which is irridescent green
There is a feast of the three Saints in Innisfail, lots of fresh produce and a variety of multi-cultural food for sale,
Also performing for the crowds were several singing and dancing groups of school children. These played several sets on drums and in this photo they were playing on plastic chairs.. very good indeed
Swam at Etty Bay and along comes dad with baby Cassawary and another on the road home.
There is an unspoiled piece of rainforest reaching down to the beach about 5km north of Flying Fish Point. It is called Ella Bay. The owner dedicated it to be a natural habitat for the Cassawaries in the area. Apparently, he has changed his mind and is proposing a massive resort development for the site. Needless to say, the locals are less than happy. I went fishing at Ella Bay
Ella Bay, unspoiled bit of paradise, just waiting to be spoiled !
Spent a lot of time downloading a talking book because there was an offer of a “free book download” once a month if I joined a $14.50-a-month plan. After I downloaded my first free audio book, I found that to use it in the car, it needed to be MP3 format. The options to create anything other than Ipod, IPhone I-etc. did not include any MP3 player I ever heard of. I spent hours trying to get it to create MP3 even on a CD.. Eventually broke down, and went into 'Hardly Normal' in town and bought an IPod Nano. What do you know… the I-pod connects to the car radio by USB cable only for charging (not to play music) ! Another dead end until I remembered that I had previously bought a device that transmits from a music player to a radio frequency… Voila! Problem solved.
ANZAC Day march from the RSL down by the river along the main street.
Small amount of Diggers and lots of school children. Big turn out.
Swimming in the caravan pool and the rest of the day fishing at Ella Bay
Onwards to Cairns. Originally our plan is to stay there 5 weeks to encompass our birthdays and wedding anniversary so that we can spend it with friends. However, with our experiences up to now with coastal Far North Qld it is, (a) somewhat hot and (b) far too many mozzies and sand flies to be comfortable. So, if this situation does not improve markedly we will be setting off across the top sooner rather than later.
